Jo Grey – I am glad to be part of the fellowship
I joined Bowel Cancer Support Group UK (one of a number of Facebook support groups operated by Bowel Matters) on the recommendation of a friend after my active phase of treatment ended in January 2025. I was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma in May 2024 and had robotic surgery to remove the tumour in June 2024 followed by a short course of adjuvant CAPOX chemotherapy.
I was declared NED (no evidence of disease) in January 2025 and have had that confirmed in my first set of annual surveillance scans and colonoscopy in June 2025. Immediately on joining the group, I felt at home – seeing the connections between people at all stages of treatment and the gentle, caring welcome given to all, it felt exactly where I needed to be.
I’ve made some great friends in the group – I can’t tell you how much comfort that’s given me on difficult days. We are bonded by our shared experience and we can say things to each other we can’t always say to family and friends.
The information shared is so comprehensive and accessible which has been great when I’ve needed to know something and my chemo brain has been in full effect! I’ve felt a real sense of security that members are also actively involved in research and that they are connected to those making a difference for bowel cancer patients everywhere! You see that’s what’s special about the group – it’s a club none of us want to be a part of but which, on joining, becomes exactly the space we need and come to depend on. It’s a real fellowship and I’m so glad to be a part of it.
Gill Bainbridge – I was made to feel I was not alone
I was diagnosed in 2021 with Stage 3 at the age of 41. I have no family history of bowel cancer or any other cancer. As a family, we all struggled to comprehend my diagnosis. We were given lots of information from appointments that left us all feeling confused and lost.
The Bowel Cancer Support Group UK Facebook group was there from the start. A light in the darkness of diagnosis. It made me feel like I wasn’t alone in my battle. You can ask any question, never too much information, and someone is there with support, kind words and a whole range of knowledge.
he group has experienced warriors and their family and friends, all at different stages, but they share the common goal to support anyone going through this horrific disease.
